Shanti had some savings. She spent 38 of her savings on a book. She then spent 23 of the money that was left on lunch. What fraction of her original savings was left? Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
Need a hint?
Work out how much money is left after the book first. The 23 applies to that amount, not to the original savings.
Worked answer
- After the book, the money left is 1 − 38 = 58 of the savings.
- Lunch takes 23 of 58, so the money left after lunch is 13 of 58.
- 13 × 58 = 524, which is already in simplest form.
Answer: 5/24

Fraction of a remainder
Pupils find 23 of 58 = 512 and give that, but 512 is the money spent on lunch, not the money left.
