On Monday, Rina drank 38 of a bottle of apple juice. On Tuesday, she drank another 300 ml. At the end, 250 ml of juice was left in the bottle. What was the total amount of juice Rina drank on Monday and Tuesday?
- 330 ml
- 550 ml
- 630 ml
- 880 ml
Need a hint?
Work out how much juice was in the bottle before Tuesday first. Then find what fraction of the whole bottle was drunk on Monday.
Worked answer
- Draw a bar for the full bottle. After Monday, 58 of the bottle is left.
- The 58 left = 300 ml + 250 ml = 550 ml.
- 18 of the bottle = 550 ÷ 5 = 110 ml, so the full bottle = 110 × 8 = 880 ml.
- Monday's drink = 38 of 880 ml = 330 ml.
- Total drunk = 330 ml + 300 ml = 630 ml.
Answer: 630 ml
The mistake this question tests
Habit
Fraction of a remainder
Pupils often stop after finding Monday's 330 ml, or add 300 ml and 250 ml without first finding the full bottle, which gives the wrong total.
