A florist had an equal number of roses and lilies for sale. After selling some flowers, 14 of the roses and 25 of the lilies were left. What fraction of the flowers were left?
- 1340
- 1320
- 2740
- 110
Need a hint?
Choose a number of roses that you can take both 14 and 25 of, and use the same number of lilies.
Worked answer
- There were as many roses as lilies. Let there be 20 roses and 20 lilies, so 40 flowers.
- Roses left = 14 × 20 = 5.
- Lilies left = 25 × 20 = 8.
- Flowers left = 5 + 8 = 13 out of 40.
- So 1340 of the flowers were left.
Answer: 1340
