How to score AL1 in PSLE Maths
AL1 needs 90 marks out of 100, which means your child can lose at most 10 across both papers. For a strong child, those 10 marks rarely go on the hardest questions. They go on traps in the questions they already know how to do.

Where the last 10 marks go
- Traps in familiar questions. The careless mistakes a child repeats are worth more marks than any single hard topic.
- Carried errors in structured questions. A slip in part (a) costs the marks in part (b) too.
- Time in Paper 1. 30 questions in 70 minutes, without a calculator. Slow arithmetic leaves no time to check.
- Missing working. Method marks need the working on the paper, not in your child’s head.
An AL1 plan for the P6 year
- Sit a diagnostic paper and list the habits that cost marks.
- Practise one habit at a time until it’s right three times in a row.
- Sit a timed mock every few weeks to test the fixes under pressure.
- Check the list again: a fixed habit can come back when your child rushes.
Questions parents ask
How many marks do you need for AL1 in PSLE Maths?
90 marks or more out of 100 in Standard Mathematics. That leaves room for at most 10 lost marks across both papers.
Is the AL1 cut-off the same every year?
Yes. Achievement Levels are fixed mark ranges, not a bell curve, so AL1 is 90 and above every year.
What stops a strong child from getting AL1?
Usually not the hardest questions. It is the handful of marks lost to slips and traps in questions your child could have done: a fraction of the wrong amount, minutes left in an hours question, the increase instead of the new price.
Does Foundation Mathematics use the same scale?
No. Foundation Mathematics is graded from AL A to AL C. The bands on this page are for Standard Mathematics.
