What the format means for practice

  • Paper 1 is a speed test. 30 questions in 70 minutes without a calculator. Accurate arithmetic and time left to check matter.
  • Two-mark questions reward working. A correct method with a slip can still earn a mark, so working should always be written down.
  • Paper 2 is problem sums. Ten structured questions carry 40 marks. Most need a heuristic such as a bar model or before and after. How to solve them →
  • Errors carry. In a structured question, a wrong part (a) usually costs part (b) as well.
