Mr Lim and Ms Koh are packing hygiene kits for a community clean-up day.

  1. Mr Lim pays $27.86 for the supplies using a $50.00 note. How much change should he receive?
  2. Each kit is tied with 1.65 m of string. How much string is needed for 2000 kits?
Need a hint?

For (a), rewrite the amounts in cents. For (b), split 2000 into 2 and 1000.

Worked answer

  1. (a) $50.00 − $27.86 = $22.14. Mr Lim should receive $22.14 change.
  2. (b) 1.65 m × 2000 = 1.65 × 2 × 1000.
  3. 1.65 × 2 = 3.3, and 3.3 × 1000 = 3300.
  4. 3300 m of string is needed for 2000 kits.
Answer: 3300 m
