Priya bought cinema tickets for herself and her cousin. She paid $28.20 in total for one adult ticket and one child ticket. The adult ticket cost $2.00 more than the child ticket. How much did the child ticket cost?

    Need a hint?

Draw a bar for the child ticket and a longer bar for the adult ticket. The adult bar is $2.00 longer. What would the total be without that extra $2.00?

    Worked answer

    1. The adult ticket is the child ticket plus $2.00.
    2. Take away the extra $2.00: $28.20 − $2.00 = $26.20. This is the cost of 2 child tickets.
    3. Child ticket = $26.20 ÷ 2 = $13.10.
    Answer: 13.10

    Calculation slip

Splitting $28.20 equally gives $14.10, which is the average of the two tickets, not the child ticket. Taking the whole $2.00 off $14.10 gives $12.10, which is also wrong.
