Answer both parts.
- Find the value of 37 ÷ 6. Round your answer to 2 decimal places.
- Find the value of 4.7 × 300.
Need a hint?
For (a), work out the next digit after the second decimal place before you round. For (b), first multiply 4.7 by 3, then multiply by 100.
Worked answer
- (a) 37 ÷ 6 = 6 remainder 1, so the answer is 6 and 1/6 more.
- (a) 1/6 = 0.1666 recurring, so 37 ÷ 6 = 6.1666 recurring.
- (a) Look at the third decimal digit, which is 6. It is 5 or more, so round up the second decimal digit: 6.17.
- (b) 4.7 × 3 = 14.1 (multiply the digits first, ignoring the decimal point: 47 × 3 = 141).
- (b) 4.7 × 300 = 14.1 × 100 = 1410, since multiplying by 100 moves the decimal point 2 places to the right.
The mistake this question tests
Calculation slip
Pupils often cut the division off at 6.16 instead of rounding, or move the decimal point the wrong way when multiplying by 100, giving 141 or 14.1.
