At the school fun fair, Nurul is buying art materials while Isaac is sharing the proceeds from a class stall.

  1. Nurul had $9.60. She spent $3.45 on art materials. How much money did she have left?
  2. Isaac shared $8.64 equally among 12 classmates. How much money did each classmate receive?
Need a hint?

Keep the two decimal places lined up in (a). In (b), count in cents before sharing the money equally.

Worked answer

  1. For (a), align the decimal points: $9.60 − $3.45 = $6.15.
  2. For (b), convert $8.64 to 864 cents.
  3. 864 ÷ 12 = 72, so each classmate receives 72 cents.
  4. 72 cents = $0.72.
Answer: $0.72

Calculation slip

A common mistake in (a) is to borrow but forget to reduce the tenths. Another is to divide only the 8 dollars in (b) and ignore the 64 cents.
