Ivan had a rope of length 423 m. He used 34 of the rope to make a model. Find the length of the rope that was left.

    Need a hint?

Work out what fraction of the rope is left first. Then find that fraction of the total length, and write the answer as a mixed number.

    Worked answer

    1. Fraction left = 1 − 34 = 14 of the rope.
    2. Length left = 14 × 423 = 14 × 143 = 1412 = 76 m.
    3. 76 = 116 m.
    Answer: 1 1/6 m

    Habit

    Fraction of a remainder

Pupils subtract 34 from 423 directly, or find 34 of the rope and forget to subtract it from the total, giving the length used instead of the length left.
