Need a hint?

Find a number that 4, 7 and 10 all divide into exactly, then compare the new numerators.

Worked answer

  1. 140 is a common multiple of 4, 7 and 10.
  2. 34 = 105140 because 4 × 35 = 140 and 3 × 35 = 105.
  3. 57 = 100140 because 7 × 20 = 140 and 5 × 20 = 100.
  4. 710 = 98140 because 10 × 14 = 140 and 7 × 14 = 98.
  5. Compare the numerators over 140: 98 is the smallest, so Hiker C walked the shortest distance.
Answer: Hiker C
