Answer both parts. Give each answer as a mixed number in simplest form.
- Find the value of 5310 – 214.
- Find the value of 45 ÷ 710.
Need a hint?
For (a), change both mixed numbers to improper fractions with the same denominator before subtracting. For (b), flip the second fraction and multiply.
Worked answer
- (a) Write both as improper fractions: 5310 = 5310 and 214 = 94.
- (a) Use the common denominator 20: 5310 = 10620 and 94 = 4520.
- (a) Subtract: 10620 − 4520 = 6120 = 3120.
- (b) Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 45 × 107.
- (b) 45 × 107 = 4035 = 87.
- (b) 87 = 117.
