A rain gauge at the school recorded 4320 cm of rain on Monday and 3.85 cm of rain on Tuesday. Answer each part.

- Express 3.85 cm as a mixed number in simplest form.
- How much more rain fell on Monday than on Tuesday? Give your answer as a fraction in simplest form, in cm.
Need a hint?
For (a), write 320 with a denominator of 100. For (c), subtract the two decimals first, then write the result as a fraction and simplify.
Worked answer
- (a) 320 = 15100 = 0.15, so 4320 = 4.15 cm.
- (b) 3.85 = 385100 = 7720 = 31720 cm.
- (c) Difference = 4.15 − 3.85 = 0.30 = 30100 = 310 cm.
