Fractions and decimals: answer both parts.
- Express 438 as a decimal.
- Express 388 as a mixed number in the simplest form.
Need a hint?
For (a), first change the fraction part 38 into a decimal by dividing 3 by 8. For (b), divide 38 by 8 and then simplify the leftover fraction.
Worked answer
- (a) 3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375.
- (a) 4 3/8 = 4 + 0.375 = 4.375.
- (b) 38/8 = 4 remainder 6, so 4 6/8.
- (b) 6/8 = 3/4 when simplified, so 38/8 = 4 3/4.

Simplest form in final fraction answers
Pupils often write 4 6/8 in (b) and stop there, forgetting that 6/8 must be reduced to 3/4. In (a) some pupils write 4.38 by reading 3/8 as 0.38 instead of dividing.
