Nurul had a box of animal stickers. 23 of the stickers were cat stickers and the rest were dog stickers. She used 56 of the cat stickers and some dog stickers to decorate a folder. Altogether, 34 of all the stickers were used.
- What fraction of all the stickers were cat stickers that were used?
- What fraction of the stickers used were dog stickers?
Need a hint?
Choose a total that can be divided by 3, 6 and 4, such as 36 stickers. Then compare the dog stickers used with all the stickers used.
Worked answer
- Take 36 stickers as the total.
- There are 36 × 23 = 24 cat stickers and 36 − 24 = 12 dog stickers.
- Cat stickers used: 24 × 56 = 20.
- (a) 20 out of 36 stickers = 2036 = 59 of all the stickers.
- All stickers used: 36 × 34 = 27.
- Dog stickers used: 27 − 20 = 7.
- (b) Fraction of the stickers used that were dog stickers = 727.
Answer: 7/27
The mistake this question tests
Habit
Fraction of a remainder
A common mistake is to use the original total as the final whole. For part (b), the whole must be the number of stickers used, not all the stickers in the box.
