Mrs Tan has 512 of a bag of soil. She shares all of it equally among 15 flower pots. What fraction of the whole bag goes into each pot? Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
Need a hint?
Sharing equally among 15 pots means dividing the fraction by 15. Multiply the denominators too, then simplify.
Worked answer
- Each pot gets 512 ÷ 15.
- Dividing by 15 is the same as multiplying by 115: 512 × 115 = 5180.
- Divide the top and bottom by 5: 5180 = 136.

Simplest form in final fraction answers
Pupils multiply 512 by 15 instead of dividing, which gives a fraction much larger than the whole bag. Sharing into more parts makes each part smaller.
