Mrs Goh has two ribbons for a craft fair. The red ribbon is 6.35 metres long and the blue ribbon is 435 metres long.
- Express the length of the red ribbon as a mixed number of metres in its simplest form. [1]
- Find the total length of both ribbons. Give your answer as a mixed number of metres in its simplest form. [2]
- Mrs Goh cuts off 58 metre from the blue ribbon. Find the length of the blue ribbon that is left, as a decimal. [2]
Need a hint?
For (a), write 0.35 as a fraction out of 100 and simplify. For (b), change both fractions to 20ths before adding. For (c), change 58 to a decimal first.
Worked answer
- (a) 0.35 = 35/100 = 7/20, so the red ribbon is 6720 metres.
- (b) Write both lengths with denominator 20: 435 = 41220.
- (b) Add the whole numbers and fractions: 6 7/20 + 4 12/20 = 101920 metres.
- (c) Blue ribbon is 435 = 4.6 metres, and 58 = 0.625 metre.
- (c) Subtract: 4.6 - 0.625 = 3.975 metres.
