Need a hint?

Work out the subtraction in the brackets first, then divide. To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal.

Worked answer

  1. Change 2 1/4 to an improper fraction: 2 1/4 = 9/4 = 27/12.
  2. Change 5/6 to twelfths: 5/6 = 10/12, so 27/12 − 10/12 = 17/12.
  3. Dividing by 3/8 is the same as multiplying by 8/3, so 17/12 × 8/3.
  4. 17/12 × 8/3 = 136/36 = 34/9 = 3 7/9.
