At a drink stall, Amir's container has a capacity of 438 L, Bella's container has a capacity of 4 L 275 mL, and Chen's container has a capacity of 4.3 L. Arrange the containers from the greatest capacity to the smallest.

  1. Bella's, Amir's, Chen's
  2. Amir's, Chen's, Bella's
  3. Chen's, Bella's, Amir's
  4. Amir's, Bella's, Chen's
Need a hint?

Convert all three capacities into litres before comparing them.

Worked answer

  1. 438 L: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, so Amir's container holds 4.375 L.
  2. 4 L 275 mL: 275 mL = 0.275 L, so Bella's container holds 4.275 L.
  3. 4.3 L = 4.300 L, so Chen's container holds 4 L 300 mL.
  4. Compare: 4.375 L > 4.300 L > 4.275 L.
  5. From the greatest to the smallest: Amir's, Chen's, Bella's.
Answer: Amir's, Chen's, Bella's L

Converting units (kg, ℓ, m, cm³)

A pupil may think 4 L 275 mL is more than 4.3 L because 275 is bigger than 3. But 4.3 L = 4 L 300 mL, which is more than 4 L 275 mL.
