Ahmad had a roll of ribbon 15.36 m long. He cut 14 pieces of ribbon, each 78 cm long, from the roll.
- What was the total length, in centimetres, of the 14 pieces of ribbon?
- How much ribbon was left on the roll? Give your answer in metres and centimetres.
Need a hint?
Change the length of the roll to centimetres first. Remember 1 m = 100 cm.
Worked answer
- (a) 14 × 78 cm = 1092 cm
- (b) 15.36 m = 1536 cm
- 1536 cm − 1092 cm = 444 cm
- 444 cm = 4 m 44 cm
Answer: 4 m 44 cm m and cm

Converting units (kg, ℓ, m, cm³)
Pupils often subtract 1092 from 1536 without converting 15.36 m correctly, or write the final 4.44 m as 4 m 4 cm instead of 4 m 44 cm.
