A bicycle shop had 960 bicycles in stock. 45% of the bicycles were mountain bikes. The rest were road bikes or folding bikes.

  1. How many bicycles were NOT mountain bikes?
  2. Of the bicycles that were NOT mountain bikes, 14 were folding bikes. How many folding bikes were there?
Need a hint?

For (a), first find the mountain bikes, then take them away from the total. For (b), the fraction applies only to the 528, not to the 960.

Worked answer

  1. (a) Mountain bikes: 45% of 960 = 432.
  2. (a) Not mountain bikes: 960 − 432 = 528 bicycles.
  3. (b) Folding bikes: 14 of 528 = 528 ÷ 4 = 132.
Answer: 132 bicycles

Fraction of a remainder

Many pupils find 45% of 960 (432) and stop there, or take 14 of 960 instead of of the remainder, which gives 240 instead of 132.
