Priya's money was used only for bus fares, lunch, clothes and savings. Bus fares took 20% of her total money.
- The amount Priya spent on bus fares is 25 of the amount she spent on lunch. What percentage of her money did she spend on lunch?
- The amount Priya saved is 25% of the amount she spent on bus fares. Priya saved $90. How much money did Priya have in total?
Need a hint?
In (a), 2 units of bus fares match 20%. How many units is lunch? In (b), find the bus fares first from the savings.
Worked answer
- (a) Bus fares = 25 of lunch, so 2 units = 20%.
- (a) 1 unit = 10%, so 5 units = 50%. Lunch = 50%.
- (b) Savings = 25% of bus fares, so $90 = 25% of bus fares.
- (b) 25% of bus fares = $90, so bus fares = $360.
- (b) Bus fares are 20% of her total, so 20% = $360.
- (b) 1% = $18, so 100% = $1800.
Answer: $1800

Pupils multiply 20% by 25 instead of dividing, getting 8% for lunch. In (b), they take 25% of $90 instead of finding the amount that $90 is 25% of.
