4 identical buckets of water can fill 15 of a pond. Hassan needs another 6 such buckets and 15 identical jugs of water to fill the pond completely. Each jug holds 0.8 ℓ of water. Find the capacity of the pond.
Need a hint?
Work out how much water the remaining part of the pond needs, then find how much one bucket holds.
Worked answer
- 4 buckets fill 15 of the pond, so the whole pond needs 5 × 4 = 20 buckets.
- 4 buckets are already in, so the rest of the pond needs 20 − 4 = 16 buckets.
- Hassan uses 6 buckets and 15 jugs, so 15 jugs hold as much as 16 − 6 = 10 buckets.
- 15 jugs = 15 × 0.8 ℓ = 12 ℓ, so 10 buckets = 12 ℓ and 1 bucket = 1.2 ℓ.
- Capacity of the pond = 20 × 1.2 ℓ = 24 ℓ.
Answer: 24 ℓ

Habit
Fraction of a remainder
Pupils often treat the 6 buckets and the 15 jugs as if they were the same unit, or forget that the 4 buckets already filled 15 of the pond.
