At a toy donation drive, Lina has 9q toys. She gives away (6q ÷ 10) toys and then receives 11 more toys. How many toys does she have in the end when q = 15?
Need a hint?
First find 9q. Then remember that giving away removes toys, while receiving adds toys.
Worked answer
- Find 9q: 9 × 15 = 135.
- Find the number given away: 6 × 15 ÷ 10 = 9.
- Take away the 9 toys and add the 11 new toys: 135 – 9 + 11 = 137.
Answer: 137 toys

Some pupils forget the 11 new toys or treat them as a number to subtract. The toys are received, so they must be added.
