At a charity fun run, Daniel sold t raffle tickets. Faridah sold 7 more tickets than Daniel. Hugo sold 6 fewer tickets than Faridah.

  1. What is the total number of tickets sold by the three friends in terms of t?
  2. If t = 8, what is the total number of tickets sold by the three friends?
Need a hint?

Write the number of tickets sold by each friend, then add the three expressions and collect like terms.

Worked answer

  1. Daniel sold t tickets.
  2. Faridah sold t + 7 tickets.
  3. Hugo sold (t + 7) - 6 = t + 1 tickets.
  4. The total is t + (t + 7) + (t + 1) = 3t + 8.
  5. When t = 8, the total is 3(8) + 8 = 32.
Answer: 32 tickets
