A tailor has a ribbon of length 534 m. She cuts as many pieces of length 58 m as she can from it. How many complete pieces does she cut?
- 9
- 10
- 14
- 46
Need a hint?
Change the mixed number to eighths first, so both quantities have the same denominator. Then divide the numerators.
Worked answer
- Write the ribbon as an improper fraction: 534 m = 234 m = 468 m.
- Count the pieces: 468 ÷ 58 = 46 ÷ 5.
- 46 ÷ 5 = 9 remainder 1. 9 pieces use 9 × 58 = 458 m.
- The 18 m left is too short for another 58 m piece.
- So she cuts 9 complete pieces.
Answer: 9 pieces

Calculation slip
Choosing 10 by rounding up forgets that only complete pieces count, so the leftover piece is too short to use.
