A survey of 600 pupils was done on their favourite fruit. 25 of the pupils chose mango. 90 pupils chose apple and 150 pupils chose banana. The rest chose durian.
- How many pupils chose mango as their favourite fruit?
- What percentage of the pupils chose durian as their favourite fruit?
Need a hint?
For (b), first find how many pupils chose durian, then compare that number with the total of 600 pupils.
Worked answer
- (a) Mango pupils = 25 of 600 = 600 ÷ 5 × 2 = 240.
- (b) Pupils who did not choose mango = 600 - 240 = 360.
- Durian pupils = 360 - 90 - 150 = 120.
- Durian as a fraction of the total = 120 out of 600 = 15.
- 15 = 20 out of 100, so the percentage is 20%.
