The seats on a school excursion bus were arranged in rows. Each row had the same number of seats. Aisyah sat on one of the seats. There were 4 seats to her left and 7 seats to her right. There were 10 rows of seats in front of her and 13 rows of seats behind her.
- How many seats were in Aisyah's row?
- How many rows of seats were on the bus altogether?
- How many seats were in the rows behind Aisyah?
Need a hint?
Remember to include Aisyah's own seat when counting her row. Then multiply the seats in one row by only the number of rows behind her.
Worked answer
- (a) Count Aisyah's own seat once: 4 + 1 + 7 = 12 seats in her row.
- (b) Count Aisyah's own row once: 10 + 1 + 13 = 24 rows.
- (c) There are 13 rows behind her, each with 12 seats.
- 13 × 12 = 156 seats.
The mistake this question tests
Factors and multiples (HCF, LCM)
The common mistake is to leave out Aisyah's own seat when counting a row, or to include her own row among the rows behind her. The rows behind her do not include the row where she is sitting.
