A number pattern repeats the block 2, 0, 5, 0, 1 over and over, starting from the first number. The sum of all the numbers in the pattern is 152.
- How many complete blocks are in the pattern?
- How many times does the digit 0 appear in the pattern?
Need a hint?
Find the sum of one block first, then count how many blocks make 152.
Worked answer
- Sum of one block: 2 + 0 + 5 + 0 + 1 = 8.
- (a) Number of blocks = 152 ÷ 8 = 19.
- (b) Each block has two zeros.
- (b) Number of zeros = 19 × 2 = 38.
Answer: 38 zeros

Habit
Factors and multiples (HCF, LCM)
Pupils often count only one zero per block, or forget that the block contains two zeros, giving 19 instead of 38.
