At a school fair, Priya had 84 stickers. She gave away (14 + 28) ÷ 6 × 3 stickers. How many stickers did she have left?
Need a hint?
Work out the brackets first. Then do the division and multiplication from left to right.
Worked answer
- Work out the brackets: 14 + 28 = 42.
- Divide and multiply from left to right: 42 ÷ 6 = 7, then 7 × 3 = 21.
- She gave away 21 stickers.
- Stickers left: 84 − 21 = 63.
The mistake this question tests
Calculation slip
Some pupils multiply first: 6 × 3 = 18, then try 42 ÷ 18. Division and multiplication are done from left to right, so 42 ÷ 6 = 7 comes first.
