Mrs Goh had some fruits in a basket. 35 of the fruits were mangoes and the rest were lemons. The mass of each mango was 300 g and the mass of each lemon was 100 g.

  1. The total mass of all the fruits was 8.8 kg. How many fruits were there in the basket?
  2. Mrs Goh then added more mangoes to the basket. The number of mangoes increased by 25%. What is the total mass of all the fruits in the basket in the end? Give your answer in kilograms.
Need a hint?

Think of the fruits in groups of 5: 3 mangoes and 2 lemons. Find the mass of one group first. For (b), find how many mangoes were added.

Worked answer

  1. (a) Think of the fruits in groups of 5: 3 mangoes and 2 lemons.
  2. Mass of one group = 3 × 300 + 2 × 100 = 1100 g.
  3. Total mass = 8.8 kg = 8800 g.
  4. Number of groups = 8800 ÷ 1100 = 8.
  5. Total number of fruits = 8 × 5 = 40.
  6. (b) Number of mangoes = 3 × 8 = 24.
  7. Increase in mangoes = 25% of 24 = 6 mangoes.
  8. Extra mass = 6 × 300 = 1800 g = 1.8 kg.
  9. Total mass in the end = 8.8 + 1.8 = 10.6 kg.
Answer: 10.6 kg
