Gita, Hafiz and Lena share a sum of money from a recycling drive in the ratio 2 : 5 : 3. Hafiz receives $720.

  1. How much money does Lena receive?
  2. Lena then gives $50 of her money to Gita. How much money does Gita have now?
Need a hint?

Find the value of one part first from Hafiz's share. Then work out Gita's share before Lena's gift changes it.

Worked answer

  1. Hafiz is 5 parts, so 1 part = 720 ÷ 5 = 144.
  2. (a) Lena is 3 parts, so Lena receives 3 × 144 = 432.
  3. Gita is 2 parts, so Gita receives 2 × 144 = 288 at first.
  4. (b) Gita now has 288 + 50 = 338.
Answer: 338

Habit

Stopped at one part in ratio

Many pupils treat $720 as the total instead of Hafiz's share, or subtract the $50 from Gita's share instead of adding it.
