Four pupils each painted a fraction of a fence in the school garden. Amy painted 710, Ben painted 34, Cara painted 45 and Dev painted 920. Arrange the four names from the one who painted the least to the one who painted the most.
Need a hint?
Can you write all four fractions with the same denominator? Think of a number that 10, 4, 5 and 20 all divide into.
Worked answer
- Find a common denominator for 10, 4, 5 and 20: 20 works.
- Write 710 = 1420, 34 = 1520, 45 = 1620, and 920 stays as 920.
- Compare the numerators: 9 < 14 < 15 < 16.
- So the order from least to most is Dev, Amy, Ben, Cara.
Answer: Dev, Amy, Ben, Cara

Factors and multiples (HCF, LCM)
Pupils compare only the denominators or the numerators without making the denominators equal, so the order comes out wrong.
