Find the number of roses and tulips at first using one part, then work out each new number before adding them.

Worked answer

  1. Total 96 is 3 + 5 = 8 parts, so 1 part = 12.
  2. Roses at first = 3 × 12 = 36; tulips at first = 5 × 12 = 60.
  3. Roses after selling 12 = 36 − 12 = 24.
  4. Tulips after = 4 × 24 = 96, since roses : tulips = 1 : 4.
  5. Total after = 24 + 96 = 120.
Answer: 120 flowers
