Need a hint?
Work backwards from the 90 roses left. If 14 was sold in the afternoon, what fraction was left?
Worked answer
- After the morning sales, the florist had some roses left.
- In the afternoon, she sold 14 of these remaining roses, so 34 were left.
- 34 of the remaining roses = 90 roses
- 14 of the remaining roses = 90 ÷ 3 = 30 roses
- Remaining roses before afternoon = 30 × 4 = 120 roses
- Roses sold in the morning = 240 − 120 = 120 roses
Answer: 120 roses
