A bakery baked 252 muffins and 180 scones on Monday.

  1. Write the ratio of the number of muffins to the number of scones in its simplest form.
  2. On Tuesday, the bakery baked muffins and scones in the same ratio as in part (a). It baked 210 scones. How many muffins did it bake on Tuesday?
Need a hint?

In part (a), find the largest number that divides both 252 and 180. In part (b), first find the value of one unit.

Worked answer

  1. (a) 252 : 180 ÷ 36 = 7 : 5 (HCF of 252 and 180 is 36).
  2. (b) Scones 5 units = 210, so 1 unit = 42.
  3. Muffins = 7 units = 7 × 42 = 294.
