Place value and rounding: the one-place-out mistake

The working is one line long and the answer is ten times too small or too big. With numbers up to 10 million a digit lands one place to the left or right of where it belongs, and rounding "to the nearest hundred thousand" gets done to the nearest ten thousand. Every mark on these questions is lost to the same slip.

What it looks like

PSLE-style question · 1 mark

What is the value of the digit 8 in 4 806 213?

  1. Name the places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions.
  2. The 8 is in the hundred thousands place.
  3. Value = 8 × 100 000 = 800 000
80 000 800 000 ✓

Why 80 000 is wrong: The 8 was read as ten thousands, one place too far to the right.

Why children do it

  • Seven-digit numbers are read in groups of three, but the place names (ten thousands, hundred thousands) are not printed on the page.
  • Counting places from the left is natural when reading, but the places are named from the right.
  • Rounding instructions name a place; the digit that decides the rounding is the one to its right, which is easy to skip under time pressure.

How to fix it at home

  • Have your child write the place names above a number once, from the right, before answering.
  • Say numbers out loud in groups: "four million, eight hundred and six thousand, two hundred and thirteen". The spoken words name the places.
  • For rounding, circle the digit in the named place, then underline the one to its right: that one decides.
  • Check the size: the value of a digit in the hundred thousands must have five zeros.

Questions parents ask

Is place value still tested at P6?

Yes. Numbers up to 10 million are in the P5 syllabus and Paper 1 regularly asks for the value of a digit or a rounded number.

My child gets small numbers right but not large ones. Why?

Up to five digits the places are familiar. The ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions places are newer, and the spaces between groups of three are easy to miscount.

How does Knowbotic help?

A wrong value one place out is a known trap on these questions, so the app names the habit and gives more place-value questions until it is right three times in a row.
