Mr Tan received p cartons of eggs. Each carton contained 8 eggs. 4 eggs were broken, so he shared the remaining eggs equally among 6 families.

  1. How many eggs did each family receive, in terms of p?
  2. Each family received 10 eggs. Find the value of p.
Need a hint?

Find the total number of eggs first. Remove the 4 broken eggs before dividing the remainder equally among the 6 families.

Worked answer

  1. Total number of eggs = 8 × p.
  2. After removing the 4 broken eggs, 8p − 4 eggs remain.
  3. Each family receives (8p − 4) ÷ 6 eggs.
  4. Total eggs shared = 10 × 6 = 60.
  5. 8p − 4 = 60.
  6. 8p = 64.
  7. p = 64 ÷ 8 = 8.
Answer: 8 cartons

The mistake this question tests

Habit

Fraction of a remainder

A common mistake is to divide all 8p eggs by 6 immediately. This wrongly includes the 4 broken eggs among the eggs shared.
