Mr Ravi bought a tablet for $680 after a discount of 20%. He also bought a pair of earphones for $90 after a discount. The total discount on the tablet and the earphones was $230.
- Find the original price of the tablet.
- What was the percentage discount on the earphones?
Need a hint?
First find the discount on the tablet. Then the discount on the earphones is what is left of the $230. Compare it with the ORIGINAL price of the earphones.
Worked answer
- (a) After a 20% discount, Mr Ravi paid 100% − 20% = 80% of the original price. So 80% = 45 of the original price = $680.
- 45 = $680, so 1 unit of 15 = $680 ÷ 4 = $170.
- Original price of the tablet = 5 × $170 = $850. The discount on the tablet was 1 unit = $170.
- (b) Discount on the earphones = $230 − $170 = $60.
- Original price of the earphones = $90 + $60 = $150.
- Percentage discount = $60 ÷ $150 × 100% = 40%.
The mistake this question tests
Found the increase, not the new price
Many pupils work out the percentage using the price Mr Ravi paid ($90) instead of the original price, because the discount is always a percentage of the original price.
